Program Description

Get ready to salsa your way through Miami's rich tapestry of Cuban history and culture, with a program that's hotter than a Miami summer! The iconic Freedom Tower, standing tall against the city skyline for nearly a century, holds more than just bricks and mortar—it's a symbol of hope and resilience for generations of Cuban refugees.

On Monday, October 21, 2024, the Lawrenceburg Public Library is turning up the heat with a sizzling program that shines a spotlight on the untold stories of Cuban immigrants. Join our fearless explorers, including the sixth director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), Crosby Kemper, and Miami Dade College President Madeline Pumariega, as they unlock the secrets of the historic Freedom Tower.  And that's not all—prepare to be dazzled by the insights of Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Ada Ferrer, whose book "Cuba: An American History" peels back the layers of the Cuban immigrant experience in the U.S.

But wait, the fiesta doesn't stop there! After soaking in the history at the Freedom Tower, we're hitting the streets of Little Havana for a taste of authentic Cuban culture. Rub shoulders with community legends like Alberto Ibargüen, Aida Levitan, Sam Verdeja, and A.J. D'Amico as we dive into a spirited discussion on Miami's growth and change, all while feasting on mouthwatering Cuban cuisine at the legendary Versailles.

So grab your guayabera and your dancing shoes, because this journey through Cuban heritage is going to be a fiesta to remember! Don't miss out on the fun—join us for a day of discovery, dialogue, and delicious delights!"
